Swansea’s rich sporting history and heritage is
embedded deeply within the community. Swansea
City Football Club can trace the use of their Vetch
Field ground back to 1911 when they played on a
‘clinker’ surface, as a result of the ground being the
site of the former coal store for the local gas works.
The sports ground was shoehorned in between
terraced housing, with the stands overlooked by
a Territorial Army depot and Swansea Prison.
By 2004, the once record attendance of nearly
33,000 had been reduced to an official capacity
of nearer 11,000. Swansea now has a world-class
multi-use sporting venue to be proud of, with the
Liberty Stadium, which opened in 2005, home
to both professional football and rugby. During
construction, 1,450 pre-cast concrete piles were
sunk into the ground; if you laid them all out end to
end, they would stretch almost 13 miles.

Morriston Golf Club is a mature parkland course
that was founded in 1920. It’s a small but friendly
club welcoming both members and visitors
during the week and at weekends. The course
is situated two minutes off Junction 46 of the M4
and is easily accessible from Cardiff, Swansea
and Carmarthen. The course measures 5,708
yards and is a par 68 for men, coming in at
4,983 yards and par 71 for ladies. It forms a fair
and enjoyable test for any level of golfer. The
tree-lined fairways leading to the lightning fast
greens are a joy to play on whatever the weather.
There’s also an experienced pro shop staff, first
class caterers and the club’s administration
team on hand to ensure that your day is one to
remember. Head Greenkeeper Darryl Bray works
hard to ensure the characterful course looks its
best all year round.
