The Chop & Ale House

20 minutes west of Edinburgh lies Champany Corner, a collection of historic buildings that house two distinct restaurants and boutique accommodation. An award-winning wine cellar and reliance on the finest Scottish beef, lamb and seafood gets the inn and restaurants off to an auspicious start. The Corner’s Chop and Ale House embodies everything that’s great about this quiet country spot; professing to have ‘the unpretentious homely atmosphere of a lowland bothy’, the restaurant delivers fresh, hearty fare with no fuss – perfect for those who don’t have time to linger over lunch. Despite offering lower prices than its neighbouring restaurant, Chop and Ale House cuts no corners: its flagship burger, for example, is made from the same beef that’s served as steak. The meat may be local, but the combinations are global: you can have your burger spiced up and served Mexican or cheesed up and delivered American style. From succulent lamb to North Sea cod fried in homemade batter, the restaurant takes well-loved dishes and serves them up with aplomb. It’s not rocket science – just very good cooking aided by the very best ingredients.

Arrived early to miss the rush. Tried to get in once before and didn’t manage it. This time - no problems, 3:45 on a Sunday. The menu is well laid out with a good variety of starters mains and deserts. Of course the place is known for the steaks so we had to have a sirloin and popeseye. The starter was fish cakes with a chilli jam the combination worked very well and was very tasty. The Steaks were cooked as we requested and there was a lot of eating in them 14oz, if I remember correctly. I found the sirloin to be a bit grizzly in parts, the popeseye was not like that. Maybe next time I will try the popeseye. The food was all served hot and principally very tasty. The house red was a very nice compliment with the steaks as well. The staff were also very attentive.
