In September 2015, Carters of Moseley was awarded Birmingham’s fifth Michelin star, making Brum the most star-laden city outside of London. The St Mary’s Row bistro now joins Purnell’s, Simpsons, Turners and Adam’s in the city’s culinary hall of fame. Suffice to say, the restaurant is well deserving of the accolade, serving good, honest food in an environment that is both charming and relaxed. Located in a Tudorbethan row of shops containing a laundrette and an estate agents, the unpretentious facade of Carters barely hints at the quality of food on offer. Popular nibbles include bread made in-house with flour from the 250-year-old Sarehole Mill down the street, served with mouthwatering pig’s fat or butter. After whetting the appetite, select your favourite dishes and prepare to be impressed. Carters’ menu utilises fresh, seasonal ingredients which change daily, and this freshness is evident from the moment you sample your first forkful. The five-course dinner experience is nothing less than joyous, with diners treated to dishes such as chicken-liver parfait scattered with toasted nuts and seeds; a lemon-spiked razor clam tartare dressed with shaved horseradish; and a decadent grey-legged partridge served with truffled polenta. Sublime.
