Edinburgh residents tend to steer clear of Rose Street for the most part, leaving the bulk of the footfall to the tourists and day-trippers who throng the pedestrianised thoroughfare. If there’s one spot on Rose Street where locals and tourists can be found in equal measure, however, it’s Element. The bar, situated at 110, has strived to offer something for everyone, and with a good deal of success. On match days, Element – like the rest of Rose Street – is rammed with rugby fans in kilts and replica tops, convivially quenching their thirst. On evenings, the bar serves as the pre-lash for revellers bound for George Street’s plush nightspots. Element’s cocktail menu is where the headiest elixirs can be found; sweet, fruity concoctions in which a mouthful of sugar and spice is chased down by a warming kick of rum. While the tourists mostly come here to drink, the bar’s local clientele includes a good number of office workers popping by for lunch or looking to ease into the weekend with post-work drinks. Element’s bistro-style food incorporates a good selection of Scottish dishes and pub favourites, infused with a contemporary twist. For Mother’s Day, Easter and other celebratory occasions, the pub offers a three-course menu for a fixed price. Try a starter of pan seared pigeon breast before moving on to a chargrilled Scottish bavette steak served with hand-cut chips and slow roast tomatoes. The burgers are particularly good, while the vegetarian options, including homemade potato gnocchi, are imaginative and flavoursome. For patrons who get peckish at the bar, a selection of nibbles, including haggis bon bons, can be ordered up until 10pm. With your stomach satisfied, you can return to the important business of drinking. What should it be, an Edinburgh Rhubarb Rocks cocktail or a Honey Nut Sour, made with Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, Amaretto and lemon? At Element, you’ve got some tough decisions to make.

One of the nicer modern cars on Rose Street. A focus in food means you might struggle to get a seat.
