Utilita Arena is a famous sports and entertainment arena that looms large over the city of Newcastle. Owned and operated by SMG Europe and sponsored by Utilita, it hosts a wide range of music, entertainment, sports and business events. Officially ranked seventh as one of the world’s busiest venues by Pollstar magazine, the arena prides itself on employing local staff within its venues who know the area and its people, and on using local suppliers and services to help support the local economy. The 40,000sq metre site, dominated by the 11,000-seater purpose-built Utilita Arena, was the brainchild of former Animals stars, the late Chas Chandler and his partner in Park Arena Nigel Stanger. It opened in 1995, with the first concert by David Bowie held in December. Since opening, the Utilita Arena has quickly established itself as a superb venue and major landmark.
