Tatton Park is an exquisite estate complete with a Tudor hall, neo-classical mansion and 50 acres of neatly landscaped gardens. The home of the Egerton family for 400 years, the estate is set in an ancient deer park. The National Trust has overseen the property since 1958, and today it features a working farm complete with rare breed animals plus Stableyard, a cheery shop and cafe. There’s enough to see and do at Tatton Park to comfortably occupy a whole day; the mansion is probably a good place to start, with its major collection of paintings, books and fine furniture. The Maurice Egerton exhibition recounts the life and times of the last baron to reside in the mansion, while a range of temporary exhibitions pop up throughout the year. Some visitors will prefer to head straight to the Old Hall, a Scheduled Ancient Monument of some beauty. As the park’s oldest building, it’s predictably got its share of spine-tingling ghost stories. Popular for weddings as well as family days out, Tatton Park is a gem set in the Cheshire countryside.
