Afflecks is a historic indoor market that occupies pride of place in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. A drapery business named Affleck & Brown originally operated in this part of town 150 years ago, before Affleck’s Palace sprung up in 1981 as a mecca for independent retailers looking for a base from which to sell their wares. Today Afflecks, as it’s simply known, forms a labyrinthine market that celebrates the alternative, the left field and the avantgarde. From top hats to tattoos and art to guitars, Afflecks is a wonderland for purveyors of the unusual. Indulge your sweet tooth at Fudge Ape, check out the vintage jackets at Milner & Webb, pick up some vinyl at Dub Merchant and admire the bespoke jewellery at Hannah Makes Things. Open till 6pm Monday to Saturday and till 5pm on Sundays, Afflecks is awash with all things bohemian, retro and quirky.

A warren of intriguing and colourful curiositiesAffleck's has been around since I moved to Manchester aged 20 and it still hits the spot, especially for young people I imagine. Lots and lots of quirky, trendy, arty and / or new agey shops and stalls over 3 or 4 floors (I always lose count). A couple of cafes too. Very good for clothes, vintage and jewellery shopping as well as present buying!
