David Livingstone Centre

The David Livingstone Centre is a biographical museum in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire dedicated to the life and work of the legendary Scottish explorer and missionary. In the 18th century tenement in which Livingstone was born, visitors can follow his life from growing up as a piecer in the Blantyre Cotton Mills to his explorations in Africa. Housed in Shuttle Row, a tenement which the Livingstones shared with 23 other families, this historic attraction is packed with items relating to his explorations in Africa. These include journals, letters and navigational equipment, as well as dioramas of significant events in his travels. The centre also gives a fascinating insight into the living and working conditions of 19th-century Scotland. Set in parkland overlooking the River Clyde, there are plenty of picturesque woodland walks in the area including along the Clyde Walkway to Bothwell Castle, making it the perfect place for a family day out.

Fascinating museum. Real insight into the background, travels and travails of this remarkable man. I say remarkable because he was, though I’m not sure I’d like him if I met him. The displays, information and whole experience offer a whole range of perspectives, a more rounded approach than expected.

This is the place David Livingston was born and grew up in. Tons of artifacts and exhibits to see of his early life and adventures to Africa. English National Trust members can get in free. Car parking is free too. Worth a visit if you are in the area. An amazing guy, who did so much in his life.
