The Entertainment Guide

Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo is Scotland’s preeminent wildlife enclosure, its spacious pens attracting a mesmerising array of creatures great and small. From aardwolves to Asian lions, all kinds of beasties and big beasts can be found scampering, prowling and crawling within its walls. Naturally, the zoo is a popular draw with families, lured not only by the creatures themselves, but also the interactive workshops that promote a hands-on approach. It’s here that kids can look forward to handling snakes, mammals and even cockroaches. When little legs finally tire of all the walking and animal spotting, a cheerful cafe is on hand to revitalise visitors, with a fair selection of snacks and drinks and a dedicated children’s menu. The zoo’s biggest attraction, the giant pandas, are housed in their own specially-constructed enclosure complete with an elevated viewing area. Booking ahead is required in order to catch a glimpse of the Chinese pandas. Tickets need to be printed in advance prior to visiting the zoo due to the immense popularity of the pandas. With the option to book upto two months in ahead however, you should have no trouble securing an intimate audience with Edinburgh Zoo’s most famous residents.

An enjoyable day out with the animal displays well laid out. The panda and penguins are both definitely worth visiting.

Great zoo with a good variety of animals. Probably got the closest to a Tiger I have ever been. The penguin area was excellent and although they do have koalas and pandas we saw neither the first due to illness the second due to it hiding somewhere. The only downside is it is very steep and I would advise walking straight to the top and then seeing it all on the way down. £4 to park with limited parking that was filling up by midday on a Saturday.

An absolutely amazing display of Chinese lanterns. What a fantastic evening - the Giant Lanterns of China are a must to see before the end of February. Fantastic, beautiful illuminations.

Edinburgh has one of the best zoos I have ever visited. There is an amazing selection of very obviously well loved and cared for animals. Be warned it (like most things in Edinburgh) the zoo is on a hill. So if you have any mobility issues please plan ahead. Have fun in know my family and I did.
