Based in Penclawdd on the Gower Peninsula, Cariad Cafe pride themselves on providing good quality, home-cooked food, made using local Welsh produce wherever possible. They serve breakfasts until 12, lunches after 12 and ice creams, cakes, coffee and tea all day. The cafe serves a range of breakfasts to suit any appetite, including a Welsh breakfast containing the famous Penclawdd cockles and laverbread. For lunch there is a choice of sandwiches, baguettes and salads as well as a soup of the day. For a more filling meal try the lasagne, builder's brunch, or one of the many daily specials. A wide selection of homemade cakes and treats are available throughout the day including gluten free options. In the afternoons, the brownies, scones with clotted cream and jam, toasted teacakes, muffins, cookies, and Welsh cakes go down a treat. Ice cream sundaes are a firm favourite, as well as cones or tubs to take away. As for drinks, take your pick from teas, coffees and cold drinks including beers and wine during the day. On Friday nights, the cafe runs a three-course bistro set menu which changes on a monthly basis. The bistro is fully licensed and offers beers from the Gower Brewery and spirits from the Penderyn distillery. Booking is essential for the bistro evenings. Whole cakes are available to purchase on pre-order including the cafe’s famous chocolate, Victoria sponge, coffee and walnut, carrot cake, raspberry and almond and lemon drizzle. In terms of food, see the specials boards for a selection of the finest dishes that Cariad Cafe rustles up on a regular basis. Expect to see bangers and mash, curries, quiches, pizza, fish cakes, calamari and much more. Open till 4pm through the week, 3pm on Sundays and till 11pm on bistro nights, Cariad Cafe is well worth a look if you’re in the area.
