Taking its name from Helgi, the warmongering Viking favoured by the gods, who had a penchant for poetry, Helgi’s nods to Orkney’s Viking heritage. This harbourside haunt, just a stone’s throw from the old town, offers a warm welcome alongside a hearty menu with an emphasis on home cooking. For a quieter dining experience, head upstairs away from the main bar where you can enjoy the quaint views over the harbour while you eat. The portions are generous, but there’s also a snack menu available in the afternoon for those just wanting a lighter bite. Went on a very busy Saturday night, we had booked a table but had to wait a short while. Not a problem as they have a good selection of local ales and gins. Good selection of food but we went because they have a good choice of gluten free meals. Friendly and excellent service.
