The Entertainment Guide

Carlisle Cathedral

Carlisle Cathedral is considered one of the jewels of North West England and, after standing on the border with Scotland for almost 900 years, it has a lively story to tell. It delights visitors with its awe-inspiring artwork and features, including the Ceiling of the Choir, the Bishop’s Throne, Brougham Triptych, wooden screens, stained glass windows and very mysterious and rare Scandinavian runic inscriptions from the twelfth century. If ancient art is of interest to you then don’t miss the Treasury Exhibition which displays a number of archaeological gems found in the excavation of the area, as well as a series of illustrated panels which tell the story of the history of Christianity in Cumbria from the beginning to the present day. Worship is offered every day of the year, with sung Evensong in term time every day except Saturday. Visitors of all traditions and faiths are always welcome to join the congregation at these services. Located in the centre of Carlisle, the Cathedral also offers a gift shop and cafe serving both breakfast and lunch.

Carlisle cathedral is full of history and inside is a well kept place of worship and also a nice tourist venue. Its in the city centre so you can walk from there and close by to shops and local amenities. Well worth a visit.
