Lion and Lobster is a terrific Brighton hang-out. One of the region’s oldest and most beloved pubs, the Sillwood Street venue is a warren of vintage interiors and charming fixtures – brass rails everywhere you look, roaring fires, the odd bit of mahogany panelling and framed prints adorning blood-red walls. Spread over three floors, it comprises a handsome pub, a regency restaurant and a hidden roof terrace. If you’re in search of delightful home-cooked food or an unpretentious escape from the outside world, you’ve found the place. There are both restaurant and bar menus to choose from, whether you feel like Sussex lamb shoulder shepherd’s pie or pan-fried silver mullet and samphire. The Lion and Lobster is a great venue for Sunday lunch, with Sunday staples like topside of beef with Yorkshire pudding, free-range roast chicken and stuffing and slow-roasted pork belly on offer. When you’ve sated your appetite, why not watch some live sports in the bar? The booze is in plentiful supply and what’s more, it’s good stuff – Dark Star ales, Pol Roger Brut Reserve champagnes and an extensive list of lagers and international grade wines. A traditional pub with bags of charm, The Lion and Lobster is in a class of its own.
