The grandly-titled Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition Experience lets visitors get to grips with the history and mythology of Scotland’s most celebrated loch. Chart the evolution of the waterway, from Ice Age to present day, as you explore seven themed areas in an engaging multimedia presentation. 500 million years of history are revealed and the famous Nessie legend, with its hoaxes and half-truths, is given a special focus. The exhibition, first opened by Sir Ranulph Fiennes 30 years ago, uses a dizzying mix of lasers, digital animations and special effects, shining a torch on Scotland’s geological past and peeling back the layers of its rich and varied folklore. You can even view equipment used to navigate the loch and the kit used to plumb its dark depths. Naturally, the Loch Ness Centre is the ideal place to book a Deepscan boat trip of the loch itself. Elsewhere, the terrific Nessie Shop is stocked with an array of cuddly toys, books about Nessie and themed keepsakes. When you require sustenance, the ultra-modern Cobbs Cafe does an excellent line in home baking and coffees. If you’re mad about the monster, or just want to learn a little about one of Scotland’s natural treasures, a visit to the Loch Ness Centre is a must.

There is free parking and social distancing was in place due to Covid. When I visited there were only two other people at the attraction. The experience was a sound and vision display where you walked into different rooms for the next bit of the story. Whilst there were some interesting facts about the science behind whether Nessie exists and a story of how a previous manager of the hotel saw the creature, I felt it was more suited to families with children who would probably have appreciated it more then me. The shop was huge with every type of Nessie related souvenir you could imagine. I bought some gifts as they were fun. There were also some high quality items too - not all with Nessie on them!
