Belfast Zoo is owned and operated by Belfast City Council. The 55 acre site which opened in 1934, home to over 1,000 animals and some 150 species makes a thrilling day out for the whole family. Located on Antrim Road, in the north of the city, the zoo’s residents hail from all around the globe. Many of the animals are becoming increasingly threatened in their natural habitat which is why the zoo helps carry out vital conservation work on a daily basis, taking part in 61 European and worldwide collaborative breeding programmes. You can gain an insight into such work by visiting the Andean bears, Western lowland gorillas and the herd of Rothschild’s giraffes. Elsewhere, meet the François Langurs, capybaras and meerkats. In addition to the zoo itself, visitors can take a relaxing lunch at the picnic tables by the lakeside near the zoo’s entrance. Alternatively, duck into the Lion’s Den Restaurant which offers a fine line of soups, sandwiches and hot meals washed down with a coffee. The all-new Adventurer’s Learning Centre, is another great addition that’s proving very popular with families.

Visited here with my partner and our young kids (4&6yo girls) and really enjoyed our stay. The weather was decent and most of the animals were out and about which really helped. The zoo itself isn’t overly big, we managed to walk around all of it, with a lunch stop in the cafe at the top, in about 3 hours.
Brilliant visit once or twice a year with my family my 4year loves it would be a sin if it was ever to be closed down.
