Bonsai Bar Bistro is one of Edinburgh’s most popular Japanese restaurants, and it isn’t difficult to see why. Set on Richmond Street, the restaurant is just minutes from the National Museum of Scotland and the Festival Theatre, two of the city’s greatest attractions. Bonsai serves all kinds of Japanese cuisine, so it isn’t just for sushi lovers; whether you fancy some salmon sashimi, a teppanyaki or tempura vegetables, Bonsai has it all. The staff are very friendly, and are always happy to give recommendations, which is a huge asset to a restaurant like Bonsai, where it’s easy to get bamboozled by the large menu. What’s more, service at Bonsai is always very speedy, so it’s a great place to stop for lunch amidst a busy day out, while the menu is reasonably priced in comparison to many of the city’s other Japanese restaurants. Being a bar as well as a bistro, you’ll also be able to order your favourite Japanese drinks at Bonsai, including plum wine and sake.

We had a lovely selection of dishes in a friendly and bustling atmosphere. Good value and good chat.
Think we must be the best family customers ever as we keep returning. We all love the bento boxes as gives you everything you need for lunch, keeping our 2 hungry boys satisfied every time. Highly recommend as there's something for everyone even if you don't like sushi/raw fish, like chicken teriyaki with rice.
