Bath-2020-2021 - page 4

very British major city can boast of being steeped in history, but Bath is one
conurbation with no need to show off. Its storied past, wrapped in Roman
architecture, romantic literature and rolling countryside, speaks for itself. The hot
springs, Georgian buildings, literary heroes, temples and statues are all reason
enough to make the pilgrimage to Somerset, but upon arrival, there’s a whole lot
more to make you stay.
It’s possible to “do” Bath in a weekend, but should you attempt such a feat, don’t be surprised
when you find yourself booking a prompt return to tick off the many attractions on your
bucket list that you failed to complete at the first time of asking. The ancient Roman Baths
themselves and the modern Thermae Bath Spa, fortified by the nation’s only hot springs,
can easily occupy a day of their own, and that’s before you attempt to tackle the museums,
galleries, festivals, theatres and music venues vying for your attention.
Jane Austen fans will want to walk the majestic streets of Royal Crescent and the Circus,
while history buffs – ancient history buffs to be precise – will want to make a beeline to
Stonehenge to witness one of the great wonders of the old world. Like many fine cities, some
of Bath’s greatest secrets lie not in its bricks and mortar but in its gardens and parks – the
green spaces, without which the architectural splendour of its historic houses would feel
hollow. The Hidden Gardens of Bath tour will show you a side of the city you
wouldn’t have known existed, one replete with winding paths, shaded
arbours, views to die for and afternoon tea to take time out for.
Naturally, it’s not all about the past: the Bath of the present
is a vibrant and contemporary city that can furnish
visitors with thrills, spills and experiential memories
galore. Enjoy enviable views of the lush Somerset
countryside from a hot air balloon, sizzle up a storm
at Lucknam Park Cookery School, and see if you
can crack the code in Bath Escape Room, before
decamping to a local gastropub for a well-earned
pint of local ale and a hearty meal.
Bath’s food scene is a matter of local pride and
national envy. From Michelin star restaurants to
street vendors serving the freshest international fare,
there’s a lot to love and linger over. When it comes to
drinks, Bath is equally well-equipped. This is the home
of Somerset cider after all, the perfect tipple for those long
summer days, and the local craft ale also goes down a treat.
