HERSCHEL
MUSEUM OF
ASTRONOMY
The Herschel Museum of
Astronomy is the historic site
from which William Herschel
discovered
the
planet
Uranus in 1781. Using his
own telescope, homemade
on site, Herschel found the
solar system to be double
the size it had previously
been believed to be. Not only
were the Herschel family
renowned astronomers, but
also accomplished musicians
and here you can explore
their home, workshop, early
telescopes and important
artefacts in the history of
space exploration. Marvel
at the details of scientific
discoveries and leap forward
in the early understanding of
space in the informative and
fascinating exhibits found
within this grand home. The
museum also plays host to a
variety of talks, exhibitions,
lectures and events throughout
the year, as well as providing
a programme of workshops
for schools, scouts, brownies
and education groups of all
ages. Open every day except
Christmas day and Boxing
day, Herschel Museum of
Astronomy can be explored
from 1pm till 5pm on weekdays,
10am till 5pm on weekends
and bank holidays and from
11am to 5pm throughout July
and August.
