Lacock Abbey
Set in the picturesque English village of Lacock,
Lacock Abbey is a National Trust heritage site,
boasting stunning grounds as well as many
historical artifacts and works of art. The Grade I
listed building was originally anAugustinian nunnery
when founded by the Countess of Salisbury in the
early 13th century before being converted into a
private home around the time of the dissolution of
the monasteries. Through the years many additions
and changes have been made to the building’s
makeup, such as a gothic great hall and gateway
in 1754, and alterations to the South Front in the
mid 1800s by its resident, William Fox Talbot.
Once inside you’ll also find an octagonal Tudor
turret room, Renaissance carvings, sculptures and
vaulted mediaeval cloisters. Harry Potter fans may
recognise some of the interior areas from Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. As well a being
a stunning stately home with impressive gardens,
the Abbey is also home to a fascinating museum
dedicated to the founding of photography, The Fox
Talbot Museum, inspired by the work and world
changing inventions of Lacock’s renowned owner.
Charting the full history of the art form, you can
learn about its beginnings right through to modern
day technological capabilities. A programme of
events is available in season, including dedicated
photography exhibitions, nature trails, educational
activities and installations. After spending time
delving into everything the Abbey has to offer, you
can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat, with a choice of
the Courtyard Tea Room or the Stables Cafe. If you
prefer to bring your own lunch however, there’s the
option to find a spot in the pretty grounds and picnic
al fresco. As your visit draws to a close, you can
pick up a memento at the National Trust gift shop.
