With over 60 years’ kilt-making
experience, it would be fair to
say that R&I MacDonald know
their tartan. But they don’t just
sell and advise on Scotland’s
national dress - they stitch it
too. The MacDonald family
have been sewing kilts for
generations, their sartorially
elegant designs gracing
ceilidhs, parties and proms.
Located in West Calder,
R&I MacDonald sell their
wares out of their traditional
store and also on the less
traditional internet via their
online shop. With Edinburgh
playing host to a number
of shoddy tartan outlets, it
is reassuring so see R&I
MacDonald’s insistence on
selling only hand-sewn kilts of
the finest quality. As well as
providing kilts, the family-run
firm also sell a diverse range
of sporrans, brooches and
skean dhu. Always happy to
impart advice, the company
provide a comprehensive
measurement service to
ensure that every garment fits
snugly, no matter how slight
or generously-proportioned
