Lanarkshire-2020-2021 - page 4

o the south-east of Glasgow lies a county of bucolic beauty interspersed with a
ribbon of bustling towns and villages. Lanarkshire is as prized for its rolling hills
and sprawling country estates as it is for its quaint tearooms, gastropubs, festivals
and fairs. It takes a lot to lure Glasgow’s dining set away from the city, but thanks
to a handful of acclaimed restaurants and chic bistros, Lanarkshire attracts swathes
of the city’s discerning diners every weekend. While Lanarkshire, particularly the
south, is popular with cyclists and walkers, there’s enough here to enthrall those who prefer
more urban pleasures. The towns of Motherwell, Hamilton, Cumbernauld and Lanark are
replete with modern shopping centres, 24-hour gyms and all the other trappings of 21st century
life. You can leave the big city behind in Lanarkshire and escape to the country, but don’t feel
you have to.
M&D’s aka Scotland’s Theme Park and the impressive Summerlee Museum of Scottish
Industrial Life ensure there’s enough here to keep families and culture buffs entertained. Others
are more interested in leaving the bright lights and thrum of traffic behind, swapping Glasgow
for the tranquility of Lanark Golf Club, with its natural moorland fairways and utter serenity.
The Lowlands county is also home to two world heritage sites in the form of New Lanark and
the Antonine Wall plus the National Museum of Rural Life and Low Parks Museum.
All through the year, Lanarkshire plays host to a number of festivals and other events including
the International Hot Air Balloon Festival. In addition to hosting race meets
that make for a cracking day out, Hamilton Park Racehourse now
throws a Music Festival Racenight that complements the thrill of
the horses with the thrill of live indie music from top British
bands. With beautiful country parks offering amazing
scenery, a wide range of museums uncovering local
history, visitor centres and attractions that allow you to
get up close with local and exotic animals and a huge
range of indoor and outdoor activities, there’s a lot
going on in Lanarkshire.
If you know where to look, Lanarkshire offers a
wealth of enticing options, from accommodation
to entertainment. Without that all-important local
knowledge, however, discovering the Lowlands
county’s best bars, freshest seafood restaurants,
greatest family attractions and chirpiest cafes comes
down to pot luck. The Entertainment Guide believes that
no holiday or business trip should be dependant upon
sheer serendipity. Your time is too valuable to be spent on
run-of-the-mill attractions and forgettable eateries. Thankfully,
there’s a better way.
