Mondo Hotel Restaurant may be joined on to the

hotel of the same name, but it stands alone as a

formidable establishment in its own right. It’s not

just hotel guests who dine here: the restaurant

attracts diners from across Lanarkshire, lured by

the slew of favourable reviews coupled with the

fair prices. Mondo was born in July 2012 when the

Coatbridge multi-purpose hotel, bar and restaurant

rose from the ashes of Centre Lodge. Thanks to

an extensive refurbishment and complete menu

redesign, the restaurant is unrecognisable from the

premises that once occupied this space. It’s a comfy

and yet stylish place in which to savour a leisurely

meal with friends. On winter evenings, Mondo’s two

log fires, which occupy pride of place in the dining

room, provide a natural focal point. Request a table

close by if you can and watch as the flames flicker

and dance in the hearth, enhancing the cosiness.

Mondo makes much of its reliance on local food

suppliers including Edinburgh butcher J. Gilmour

and Lanarkshire’s Albert Bartlett potatoes. The menu

is packed with mouthwatering options including

Gressingham duck breast with pan-fried beetroot

and Lyonnaise potatoes, loin of pork stuffed with a

mushroom and mustard tapenade and the chef’s

own fish and chips, a collection of dishes which

fuse old-fashioned crowd-pleasing with an eye on

contemporary styles and favourites. Daily specials

keep things fresh, incorporating seasonal produce

as it becomes available. Examples include a duo of

duck and pan seared monkfish to start followed by a

main course of pork fillet wellington and wasabi and

sesame crusted salmon. Finish proceedings with an

indulgent dessert of chocolate orange mousse and

rhubarb and custard. The cocktails are just as good:

try the Mondo Sunrise, a refreshing combination of

Smirnoff Vodka, Midori, Malibu and orange juice

finished with a splash of Grenadine. Delicious.
