La Mama is just one of the many amazing culinary

choices to be found in the area informally known

as the Sheffield Food Mile. Running just south of

the city centre, along London Road and into the

start of Abbeydale Road, this stretch packs in

more great cuisines from around the world than

anywhere else in the city. La Mama is a family-run,

fully licensed tapas bar and restaurant. The tapas

menu comprises inventive and authentic dishes

from Chile and Spain. The venue also regularly

hosts live music nights, inspired by the sounds

of Latin America, and is available for private hire.

Everyone knows that the point of tapas is to share.

But this lovely Latin-style restaurant makes that

really difficult: everything on the menu tastes

so great, you can be forgiven for keeping it all

to yourself. The menu at La Mama just goes on

and on: empanadas, croquetas, patatas bravas,

tortilla, chorizo, ali-oli...everything you try, you’ll

love. Don’t miss tapas happy hour, which runs all

night Tuesday and 6-8pm on Wednesdays and

Thursdays. If you’re in luck, there may be some live

jazz or Latin American-inspired music on too. The

restaurant is also open from 12pm every Saturday,

offering a special lunchtime menu featuring

traditional pinchos, salads and tapas happy hour

deals starting at just £2.60. La Mama’s menu

should be largely familiar, with the odd Chilean

dish thrown in such as the fish stew cooked in a

clay pot and the whole sea bass. Try the salmon

pappillonne, a handsome chunk of sweet flavoured

fish with vegetables with a perky tomato sauce, or

pollo piccante, a butterflied chicken breast with

green peppers on a red wine sauce. Desserts are

homemade and extremely indulgent. The Chilean

pannacotta is worth a look, as is Borrachito de

Frambuesa, sponge soaked in raspberry liqueur

with a strawberry sauce and chilli chocolate.
