DUNDONALD
CASTLE
Dundonald Castle Visitor Centre
Winehouse Yett, Dundonald
Ayrshire, KA2 9HD

The words ‘historic’ and ‘castle’
go together like fish and chips.
Still, there’s no disputing
the rich history that’s woven
into the very foundations of
Dundonald Castle. You can
sense it as you gaze up at the
brooding building, posited on
a hill overlooking the village
of Dundonald. The castle
may have succumbed to the
elements, having faded from
its 15th century pomp, but it
remains a captivating sight to
behold. Following centuries
of neglect, Dundonald Castle
was given the kiss of life.
Extensive renovation has seen
it transformed into a visitor
centre that’s now one of the
most popular attractions in
Ayrshire. There’s a lot to look
at and a lot to learn during
your tour of the castle, but it’s
not just a monument to the
past. Throughout the year,
Dundonald hosts weddings,
concerts and is occasionally
even used for filming. Since its
inception in the 14th century, the
castle has endured turbulent
times. It was here that Robert
II died in 1390. Today the Great
Hall is missing its roof, but the
spectacle is no less impressive.
After touring the semi-ruined
castle, agile visitors can
ascend the 30-metre path that
winds its way to the top of the
hill. Your reward for making it to
the summit?
