DEAN CASTLE
COUNTRY PARK
Dean Castle Country Park is
a fun day out for all the family
– and the best part is, it’s free.
Covering some 200 acres,
the park boasts a wealth of
scenic woodland, an adventure
playground, a 14th-century
castle and much more. Located
in the heart of Kilmarnock, the
park is popular with tourists
and locals alike who flock to
visit its wildlife. Residents of
its urban farm include a trio
of kune kune pigs, donkeys,
llamas and Highland cattle.
Many will visit simply to take
a free tour of the castle, where
you can have a go at playing
some period replica musical
instruments and trying on a
suit of armour. You’ll also learn
about the castle’s history, which
has links to some of Scotland’s
most heralded figures, Robert
the Bruce among them. Dean
Castle Country Park is also a
popular venue for weddings
and conferences, thanks to its
idyllic scenery and proximity
to Kilmarnock. Celebrate your
big day at Downer House,
set within the extensive Dean
Castle Estate, and the beautiful
gardens will provide excellent
photo opportunities. Drop by
the Dean Castle Visitor Centre
for information on upcoming
events or to hear about the
park’s conservation work.
