There can be no more famous a landmark in Bath
than its namesake Roman Baths, an internationally
famous site of historic significance, to which tourists
flock year upon year. This was one of the greatest
spas of the ancient world, built on thermal springs
which to this day rise and enable the baths to flow
with naturally hot water. Once you’ve purchased a
ticket, you can choose to take a public guided tour
available on the hour every hour, or to meander
your own way around the Roman Baths and
Georgian Pump Room, accompanied by an audio
tour. Explore the sauna, changing rooms, plunge
pools, temple areas and monuments, as well as
exhibits depicting life in Roman times. Having
undergone major refurbishment in 2011 and with
more on the way, the venue makes use of modern
technology and projections to bring the baths to
life, and create a feel for what the experience would
have been like back then. Costumed interpreters
line the way too, enabling the opportunity to ask
them questions about life in Roman Britain – a
particularly popular aspect among younger visitors
and ensuring a sense of immersion as you pass
through the various areas. Children’s parties can
be arranged at the baths, plus there’s a range of
activities and educational facilities provided for
those of all ages. For refuelling you can choose
between the elegant Pump Room Restaurant, or
the contemporary styles Roman Baths Kitchen, the
latter of which also serves a special three-course
dinner package. At the end of your visit, however
it is spent, you mustn’t leave until you’ve had a
chance to sample some of the natural spa yourself
by taking a drink of the mineral and element
rich water, said to have significant health and
wellbeing benefits.
