Few restaurants in the British
Isles, much less Northern
Ireland, can offer a dining
experience on a par with The
Great Room. Part of Belfast’s
immaculate Merchant Hotel,
the restaurant is an oasis
of grandeur, its ornate and
original Victorian architecture
the perfect backdrop to an
evening of sumptuous fine
dining. With its glass cupola,
Ireland’s largest chandelier and
a stunning frieze, the restaurant
a five-star first impression.
Gastronomically, the reviews
are just as favourable. It’s
evident that only the freshest
seasonal ingredients are used
in the eloquent dishes, which
score highly for innovation and
presentation. The white crab
with fennel puree and apple is
among the splendid starters.
As you’d expect, there’s plenty
to agonise over when it comes
to main courses, among them
spiced monkfish and a to-die-
for Skeaghanore duck breast.
Refreshingly, and despite the
opulence, the menu is on the
affordable side. Incidentally, the
service is top notch, attentive
and dedicated without ever
feeling invasive. Perfect for
special occasions, or whenever
you feel like dining in the realm
of the gods, The Great Room
lives up to its name.
