The Free Press is a dimly-lit, century-old pub with
a fireplace and an intimate walled garden serving
British cuisine. One of Cambridge’s most historic
pubs, The Free Press has been quenching thirsts
for over 120 years and has seen many a change
in the area. On the fireplace wall you can look
at a survey map from 1888 where you can see
for yourself what’s changed in the intervening
years. The pub got its name from when it was a
printing press which circulated a free Cambridge
newspaper. Unfortunately it only lasted one issue,
but the name survived. The walls are adorned with
front pages of old newspapers to commemorate
this piece of trivia. The Free Press has been
awarded the Cask Marque for outstanding
cask beer quality. This award is independently
inspected and is based on several different factors
including the temperature of the beer, the aroma
and how it is served.

THE EAGLE
The Eagle is a drinking and thinking hub where
Watson and Crick announced they had discovered
‘the secret of life’. Originally opened in 1667 as the
Eagle and Child, The Eagle is owned by Corpus
Christi College and is managed by Greene King
brewery. Apart from the main bar, it sports a beer
garden and the so-called RAF bar, at the rear, with
graffiti of World War II airmen covering the ceiling
and walls. When the university’s Cavendish
Laboratory was still at its old site at Free School
Lane, the pub was a popular lunch destination
for staff working there. Thus, it became the place
where Francis Crick interrupted patrons’ lunch
on 28 February 1953 to announce that he and
James Watson had discovered the structure
of DNA. Equally importantly, the pub serves
freshly prepared, irresistible food including grilled
mackerel fillets and potted ham hock.
