Now known as Carlisle’s premier independent
live music venue, the Brickyard was formerly The
Richmond Hall, or The Richmond Memorial Hall.
The venue itself is over 100 years old and has
been a key figure in the Carlisle music scene for
many years. The Richmond Hall was built as Saint
Mary’s Parish Rooms, named in honour of the
late Canon Thomas Richmond of Canon Carlisle
Cathedral. After a long absence, The Richmond
Hall was renovated and its doors opened on
New Year’s Eve 2002 to the new name of The
Brickyard. Ideally situated between Newcastle and
Glasgow, The Brickyard is a 320 capacity venue
and features acts from a variety of genres such as
metal, punk, ska, indie and several DJ nights occur
throughout the month as well. One of their many
recurring events, the Fool’s Gold Indie Club Night is
considered Scotland’s most-travelled DJ show and
has already sold out a number of venues. Not into
rock or indie? Hip hop night offers a chance to listen
to hip-hop classics old and new. Local acts from
Carlisle also make the occasional appearance,
such as the widely-acclaimed Hardwicke Circus.
Not yet 18? That’s fine, as teenagers 14 and
over are also allowed entrance to the venue, with
some concessions. Patrons can find a cloakroom
and a bar inside so you can shrug off your jacket
and make yourself at home while enjoying the
tunes. With its trendy interior, friendly bar staff and
reasonably priced drinks, this venue aims to make
people feel welcome. With such an intimate setting
there’s always the chance of meeting your new best
friend or soulmate who shares your tastes in music.
There’s no better place in Carlisle to listen to up
and coming artists, quality cover bands or DJs than
The Brickyard.
