With its dark wood and leather
upholstery, The Central is
every bit a traditional pub. It’s
the sort of place where the
ale goes down easy and the
home-cooked comfort food
warms the stomach almost as

The Market Street pub, which
lies the shortest of strolls
from St Andrews University,
is operated by respected
British brand Taylor Walker.
Under their stewardship,
the bar has retained all of
its original character whilst
being tastefully updated to
meet the demands of the
modern drinker. One thing’s
for sure; The Central ain’t no
gastropub, but then it doesn’t
need to be. In a world of
identikit faux industrial chic
bars, it’s refreshing to enter
this time-served Scottish bar
and encounter hand-battered
fish and chips and generous
portions of pie and mash. This
is simple food, expertly done.
Pull up a seat at the bar,
order a 1730 ale and savour
a proper pub where there
are no airs and graces to be
found; just a genuinely warm
welcome and all the time in
the world to linger over a pint
or three.
