Fusion Nightclub has the boon of being Orkney’s
only nightclub. Kirkwall boasts an array of bars to
choose from, but if it’s a combination of drinking
and dancing you’re looking for, this is the place to
be and be seen. The ground floor of the club is a
large, stylish affair and has plenty of space with a
capacity for five hundred revellers, which is useful
given that it’s the inevitable meeting point for
beat-seeking Orkney tourists and locals. If you’re
from the area you’re likely to know everyone in
the place – except the visitors of course. Getting
served in crowded, loud clubs is often a problem,
but not so here. The clever design of the square
shaped bar means that you have loads of points of
contact with the staff and don’t have to suffer three
deep jostles in a bid for the bar. If you prefer a
smaller area, head upstairs to the Firelounge for a
slightly more intimate atmosphere and a maximum
capacity of two hundred. Firelounge has its own
bar and stage too, so there’s no having to carry
bottles and glasses up and down stairs. The dress
code is somewhere between smart casual and
dressy and with the cold Orcadian winds you’re
going to need a coat till you’re inside, so be aware
that the coat check gets full pretty quickly. Thus
arrive early if you want to make use of this facility.
Fusion is a great place to catch live bands,
often just before they become famous, so it’s a
definite must for music fans. Some are local, but
many travel a distance to gig here and big name
publications such as NME have been known
to make the trek north to review up and coming
talent. For those who prefer DJ sets, there’s plenty
of activity on the decks too.
