FORT GEORGE
Ardersier, Inverness, IV2 7TD
Fort George
01667 460 232
Built shortly after the Battle of
Culloden, between 1748 and
1769, the magnificent Fort
George is one of Europe’s most
formidable military fortifications.
Originally conceived as an
impregnable base for King
George II’s army, intended to
quash future Jacobite rebellions,
Fort George is a complex
warren of garrison buildings
and
battlements,
complete
with ammunition stores, gun
emplacements, army barracks,
a brew house, bake house and a
chapel. You’re sure to marvel at
the sheer scale of the fort, spread
as it is over 42 acres. Attractions
include the guardroom, the
Regimental Museum of the
Highland Regiments and the
Grand Magazine, which contains
numerous rifle displays. Those
interested in warfare will be
particularly impressed by such
weaponry:
the
exhaustive
collection of bayoneted muskets
and swords provides a terrific
insight into how war was waged
in the 18th century. As you
explore, hand-held audio guides
dispense interesting facts about
Fort George’s rich and storied
history. Beyond the battlements,
a gorgeous view of the Moray
Firth is available from the Point
Battery; on a clear day, you might
even be lucky enough to spot a
group of bottlenose dolphins.
