ARTS, CULTURE & TOURISM
THE HIGHLANDERS
MUSEUM
The Highlanders’ Museum is
located within the iconic Fort
George, and covers three
floors of the former Lieutenant
Governors’
House.
The
significance of the museum
cannot be overstated; after all,
it houses the largest collection
of military artefacts outside of
London – a whopping 20,000
items. Not only that, but it has
attained the highest possible
building conservation listing in
all of Scotland. The museum
tells the story of the Highland
Regiments through the ages,
taking as year zero the Battle of
Culloden in 1746. In addition to
a dedicated education space,
where you can learn more
about the history of this most
famous Scottish regiment,
the museum’s library is home
to around 10,000 military
documents and photographs,
as well as artefacts from allied
regiments in Canada, Australia
and New Zealand. Cared
for by Historic Scotland, and
the recipient of a £2.9 million
redevelopment grant, the
museum is a veritable treasure
trove for those interested in
Highland or military history.
From
gallantry
awards
and campaign medals to
memorial plaques and military
accoutrements, you’ll find items
here that throw a bright light
upon the past.
