HIGHLAND FOLK
MUSEUM
Kingussie Road, Newtonmore, PH20 1AY

Highland Folk Museum
Set among 80 acres of
greenery in Newtonmore, within
the magnificent Cairngorms
National Park, the Highland
Folk Museum makes a perfect
day out for the whole family.
Visitors descend on the mile-
long museum to discover how
life was lived by our ancestors,
Highlanders working on the
land from the 1700s up until
the 1960s. A conglomeration
of lovingly restored buildings,
each representing hardscrabble
rural life, is spread throughout
the site, while actors help bring
the village to life. There are
over 30 historical dwellings to
explore, furnished appropriate
to their time period. While
some have been built from
scratch, others have been
transferred to the museum
from around the UK. As well
as a 1700s township, which
features six houses, visitors
can pore over 10,000 artefacts
in Am Fasgadh. When you’ve
worked up a hunger, duck into
the cosy cafe and grab a bite to
eat. There’s also a cracking gift
shop and a kids’ playground.
You shouldn’t neglect to visit
to the historic Leanach Church
either. With working crofts and
railway halts, smoke houses
and a clockmaker’s workshop,
the Highland Folk Museum is
full of wonders.
