The Bear Inn
01865 728164
The Bear is the oldest pub
in Oxford and is a hidden
gem, just off the hustle and
bustle of the busy High
Street. The pub, which dates
back to 1242, was first
mentioned in the Cartularies
of St Frideswide. The Bear is
popular with students, locals
and tourists alike, who comer
here to enjoy a fantastic pint
of real ale and good, home-
cooked, traditional pub food.
The pub is most famous
for its quirky collection of
ties dating back to the early
1900s representing clubs in
the Oxford area and, more
recently, around the globe.
It forms a great place to
unwind, take off your own tie
and enjoy looking at everyone
else’s! Over 4,500 snippets
of club ties are on display,
the collection started in 1952
by landlord Alan Course
who worked as cartoonist
at the Oxford Mail. Tie ends
were clipped with a pair of
scissors in exchange for
half a pint of beer. The Bear
Inn is also home to a good
food menu which centres on
proper English pub classics.
They serve up seasonal
specials too, and are locally
well known for their excellent
Sunday roast.
