The Anchor is a relaxed pub and dining room
with a menu which includes simple classics and
great meat and fish dishes from the charcoal
Josper grill. Situated close to Port Meadow,
The Anchor features a cosy bar area with an
open fireplace and serves cask ales and an
excellent wine list. Its beautiful terrace is the
perfect spot for unwinding on sunny days with a
glass in your hand. The restaurant is prized for
its daily changing seasonal specials, Wadworth
beers and a great wine selection. The pub’s
restaurant area is equipped with two private
dining rooms: The Green Room which seats up
to 16 people and The Blue Room which seats up
to 14. A choice of four feasting/sharing menus
are available for family gatherings, graduations
and other celebratory occasions.The feasting
menu is packed with mouth-watering starters
such as duck rillettes as well as house hot
smoked salmon with celeriac remoulade. For
main course try the chargrilled flat iron corn fed
chicken, before finishing with a dessert of tart
tatin and vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate
mousse with whipped cream and strawberries.
On weekends, a brunch menu kicks things
off with eggs Benedict/Florentine or smoked
salmon and scrambled eggs, though feel free to
plump for the pancakes with bacon and maple
syrup or blueberries and Greek yoghurt instead.
Open Monday to Friday from 9am - 11pm and
at weekends from 10am, The Anchor’s greatest
accomplishment might just be its Sunday roast.
The inn was established in 1796 on the site of
Heyfield’s Hutt, kept by a Mr Heyfield who died in
1778 at the southern end of Hayfield Road. With
its light-filled, redbrick gastropub interior and
open fire, The Anchor is the last word in rustic
cosiness.
