          The Anchor is a relaxed pub and dining room
        
        
          with a menu which includes simple classics and
        
        
          great meat and fish dishes from the charcoal
        
        
          Josper grill. Situated close to Port Meadow,
        
        
          The Anchor features a cosy bar area with an
        
        
          open fireplace and serves cask ales and an
        
        
          excellent wine list. Its beautiful terrace is the
        
        
          perfect spot for unwinding on sunny days with a
        
        
          glass in your hand. The restaurant is prized for
        
        
          its daily changing seasonal specials, Wadworth
        
        
          beers and a great wine selection. The pub’s
        
        
          restaurant area is equipped with two private
        
        
          dining rooms: The Green Room which seats up
        
        
          to 16 people and The Blue Room which seats up
        
        
          to 14. A choice of four feasting/sharing menus
        
        
          are available for family gatherings, graduations
        
        
          and other celebratory occasions.The feasting
        
        
          menu is packed with mouth-watering starters
        
        
          such as duck rillettes as well as house hot
        
        
          smoked salmon with celeriac remoulade. For
        
        
          main course try the chargrilled flat iron corn fed
        
        
          chicken, before finishing with a dessert of tart
        
        
          tatin and vanilla ice cream or dark chocolate
        
        
          mousse with whipped cream and strawberries.
        
        
          On weekends, a brunch menu kicks things
        
        
          off with eggs Benedict/Florentine or smoked
        
        
          salmon and scrambled eggs, though feel free to
        
        
          plump for the pancakes with bacon and maple
        
        
          syrup or blueberries and Greek yoghurt instead.
        
        
          Open Monday to Friday from 9am - 11pm and
        
        
          at weekends from 10am, The Anchor’s greatest
        
        
          accomplishment might just be its Sunday roast.
        
        
          The inn was established in 1796 on the site of
        
        
          Heyfield’s Hutt, kept by a Mr Heyfield who died in
        
        
          1778 at the southern end of Hayfield Road. With
        
        
          its light-filled, redbrick gastropub interior and
        
        
          open fire, The Anchor is the last word in rustic
