VOLK’S ELECTRIC
RAILWAY
The Volk’s Electric Railway
is the oldest public electric
railway in the world. Built in
1883, the railway runs for one-
and-a-quarter miles, from the
top of the beach, the Aquarium
Station, to the Brighton
Marina (Black Rock Station).
The 12-minute journey is
a fantastic way for visitors
to see the resort’s famous
landmarks, from the Brighton
Pier to the i360 and the Royal
Pavilion. Along the route, the
train will call at Paston Place,
which gives guests a chance
to check out Peter Pan’s
playground, situated halfway
along Madeira Drive. Open to
the public each year, between
Easter and September, the
old-fashioned carriage carries
up to eighty passengers at a
time. During the season, trains
run each day, with a new one
arriving every 15 minutes,
although it’s worth keeping
an eye out for occasional
closures brought about by
events on the seafront. 2016
prices are yet to be confirmed,
but adult tickets for 2015
were a steal at £2.80, while
child tickets (3-14 years) could
be purchased for £1.70. An
Aquarium-to-Halfway journey
is also available for a reduced
charge.
