The New Club
An achingly cool hipster
hang-out on Kings Road, The
New Club brings to mind a
trendy Manhattan diner. Wall
graphics depict old New York
brownstones and sleek red
leatherette seats provide a
certain urban flair. The open-
aspect space is light and airy,
with high ceilings and massive
windows that flood the room
with natural light. Brighton’s
gastronomes have certainly
warmed to the establishment,
and it’s no surprise: the food
is every bit as pleasant as
the decor. Meals arrive on
enamelware dishes served by
friendly young waiters. Dishes
are honest and delicious,
composed
of
top-quality
seasonal ingredients and
cooked from scratch. American-
style restaurants can often
make the mistake of veering
into pastiche, overplaying the
cheap-and-cheerful diner hand;
not so at The New Club. Its
menu includes crispy-skinned
salmon with pea and pecorino
risotto and crispy chilli salt squid
with tom yum aioli. If nothing
sates your hunger better than
a burger, the hickory-smoked
Dirty Burger is a fine choice.
The drinks are similarly good:
direct trade organic coffee from
Union, refreshing cocktails and
a range of excellent bottled
beers, from Mexicali to micro-
craft favourite Anchor Steam.
