Bute Park offers an extensive area of mature
parkland within Cardiff’s city centre boasting a
nationally-significant tree collection, numerous
natural play features for the young (or young at
heart), an education centre, three cafes and a
wealth of horticulture and wildlife interest. There’s
plenty to do in the park and you can pick up a
variety of self-led trails to guide you on certain
activities and topics. Situated beyond Cardiff
Castle and just a short walk from the city’s main
high streets and civic centre, Bute Park really is
the green heart of the city. The park and arboretum
form an extensive area of mature parkland easily
accessible from the city centre and flanked by the
River Taff, Sophia Gardens, Pontcanna Fields
and Cardiff Castle. The park is full of historic and
wildlife interest. At 56 hectares (equivalent to 75
football pitches), it is one of the largest urban parks
in Wales and comprises a broad mix of historic
landscape, urban woodland, sports pitches,
horticultural features and river corridor. Few cities
have such a spacious green area at their centre.
There is plenty to do in the park and you can pick
up a variety of self-led trails to guide you on certain
activities and topics. Bute Park’s arboretum is of
national significance and, as a public park, is
unrivalled in the UK for the number of rare and
significant trees it contains. There are over 3,000
individually catalogued specimens, including
an interesting mix of rare and ornamental trees.
Most of the arboretum collections were planted
after 1947, but to complement some excellent
specimens that formed part of the 19th century
designed landscape when the land was part of
the Bute family’s private estate. Bute Park is also
proud to have the highest number of champion
trees in any UK public park, defined as the tallest
or broadest of their type.
