SEC, Glasgow, G3 8YW
The SSE Hydro – built just in time for Glasgow’s
2014 Commonwealth Games – is a truly world-
class venue. But don’t take our word for it; in 2016
the multi-purpose arena was named as the eighth
busiest music venue in the whole world in terms of
ticket sales. The hallowed arena owes its curious
shape – it looks rather like a gigantic silver bubble
– to award-winning London architects Foster +
Partners, and has hosted a number of big-name
acts over the years, including KISS, Blink-182,
Adele, Iron Maiden, The Libertines, Muse, Celine
Dion, Rod Stewart, Manic Street Preachers and,
inevitably, Wet Wet Wet. Able to hold 13,000 baying
spectators, the atmospheric Hydro has also been
the venue for major sporting events from the worlds
of UFC, boxing and gymnastics, as well as theatre
performances and stand-up shows, including a
sold-out run of Still Game Live which saw hilarious
pensioners Jack Jarvis and Victor McDade dust off
their bunnets and bring the house down. Dubbed
“Scotland’s home of live entertainment”, the SSE
Hydro has supplanted the SECC – which is just a
stone’s throw away – as the number one choice
for major acts passing through the country’s live
music capital. Whether you opt for a Seated or
Standing ticket, you’ll appreciate the sound quality,
as acoustically the venue is unrivalled in Scotland.
When night falls, the Hydro’s glass shell glows
green, with only a faint thrumming indicative of
the carnage unfolding within. The venue, which
includes a number of bars and merchandise stands,
is ideally located for a night in Glasgow; just a short
walk from the bars and restaurants of Finnieston
and, in the opposite direction, a 15-minute stroll into
the heart of of the city. Watch your favourite band
kick ass then head out into the night.
