THE LIGHTHOUSE
11 Mitchell Lane
Glasgow, Scotland G1 3NU
0141 276 5365
Since opening in 1999, when Glasgow served
as the City of Architecture and Design, The
Lighthouse has faithfully carried that mantle. Today
the centre serves as a visitor attraction, exhibition
space and venue rolled into one. The Lighthouse
cleverly dubs itself as a beacon for the creative
industries in Scotland: all year long, a variety of
events and exhibitions keep the public turning
up in their droves. Housed in the Charles Rennie
Mackintosh-designed Glasgow Herald building,
The Lighthouse also links to the Mack Tower, with
its breath-taking views of Glasgow. The first level is
occupied by Gallery One and Review Gallery, with
exhibits showcasing the many facets of art. You’ll
find more exhibitions on level two, this time curated
by Architecture and Design Scotland. Four floors
in total include events spaces that are ideal for
corporate functions and wedding receptions.

City Chambers Tours
George Square,
Glasgow, G2 1DU
CITY CHAMBERS TOURS
The City Chambers is one of Glasgow’s most
imposing buildings. Looming as it does over
George Square in the heart of the city, the palatial
property betrays a story of outlandish prosperity,
nodding to Glasgow’s former status as the Second
City of the Empire. Popular with both tourists and
locals, it first opened its doors in 1888, with Queen
Victoria herself cutting the red ribbon. The building
has long been the headquarters of successive city
councils and its grandeur makes it the cynosure of
attention among those crossing George Square.
Home to the largest marble staircase in Western
Europe, as well as the opulent Banqueting Hall
where Nelson Mandela received his Freedom of
the City in ’93, the interior is just as breathtaking
as the building’s facade. Free guided tours run
between 10:30 and 2:30 on weekdays and last for
45 minutes. You don’t even have to book!
