ORDSALL HALL
Ordsall Hall is a stunning
Tudor manor house with seven
centuries of history to its name.
The Grade I listed building,
which dates back to 1177, is
set in immaculately landscaped
grounds. Today, the house
serves as a museum, complete
with an array of hands-on
exhibitions, plus a cafe and
events space. Over the years,
the great and the good have
rested their heads in the grand
hall; Tudor nobility; the odd
earl, priests and the obligatory
spectre. That’s right, Ordsall
Hall has its share of ghost
stories, with a mysterious
white lady reputed to roam
the Great Hall. If the building
is fascinating, the grounds are
simply enchanting. On sunny
days, there’s nowhere better
to spread out a picnic blanket
on the grass. After a feast fit
for a king, take a leisurely stroll
around the gardens. These
include a late Tudor style knot
garden, Dig for Victory garden
and aromatic herb garden.
Throughout the year, an ever-
changing lineup of exhibitions
showcases everything from
local history to textiles and
photography. Don’t forget
to check out the permanent
exhibition either, the Frederic
Shields Gallery, where you’ll
meet some of the flamboyant
characters to have called the
hall their home.
