PEOPLE’S
HISTORY MUSEUM
Manchester’s People’s History
Museum is one of a kind. The
national museum has, at its root,
a genuinely egalitarian goal – to
chart the history of the struggle
for democracy and equality in the
UK. A jewel on the city’s cultural
crown, the engaging museum
reveals the fight of the working
classes through the ages, with
the battle for social justice given
sharp focus. Numerous artefacts
shine a light on a range of worthy
causes, including those relating
to the labour movement, the
struggle for LGBT rights and the
anti-war marches of 2003. Walk
through the various galleries,
gaining an insight into Britain’s
relationship with a plethora of key
issues, including an exploration
of its own colonial past. The
museum also showcases diverse
exhibitions throughout the year;
it’s worth keeping an eye on their
website for the latest information.
Permanent fixtures, meanwhile,
include a Labour History Archive
and Study Centre, a Textile
Conservation Studio, an Engine
Hall where you can enjoy a
packed lunch picnic, a souvenir
shop and an excellent cafe.
Leave the outside world behind
for a few hours, and explore
the People’s History Museum.
You might just emerge with a
fresh perspective.
