A popular Indian restaurant specialising in Punjabi
dishes, The Rupee Room does a roaring sit-in
and takeaway trade from its premises on Ayr’s
Wellington Square. Open from 4pm to 11pm Sunday
to Thursday and from 12pm to 11pm on Friday and
Saturday, the restaurant serves up authentic Indian
food that’s made with locally sourced ingredients
where possible. An a la carte menu features a good
blend of classic curries and more adventurous
chef’s specials for purveyors of new flavours.
Keep it mild and simple with a creamy korma or
an aromatic dopiaza curry made with onion and
tomato. You can elect to have your curry filled
with machi (fish), king prawn, tender lamb, minced
lamb, chicken breast or mixed vegetables. Ask for
a selection of sides and you’ll be furnished with all
kinds of fluffy, toothsome naans including peshwari
plus tandoori chapati, mince paratha and cooling
reitha. Vegetarians haven’t been overlooked at The
Rupee Room: a fine range of vegetarian dishes
includes mutter paneer, made with peas and diced
cottage cheese, a combo that proves to be far
more appetising than it might sound. There’s also
chana masala – a chickpea curry with herbs and
spices – and tarka daal, an Indian classic made
with red lentils. Service is courteous and attentive
and the open plan kitchen allows the sights, sounds
and smells that are characteristic of good Indian
cooking to permeate the large dining room. Large
bay windows allow natural daylight to enter, lending
the dining room a cheerful ambiance, particularly
at lunchtimes when things tend to be less frantic.
Take the family out and treat them to a hearty
feast or order in on those nights when you can’t
face cooking and can’t face leaving the sofa either.
The portions are generous, the food is fresh and
the prices are fair. What more could you ask of an
Indian restaurant?
