South America – Brazil and Mexico in particular – is
extremely fond of carnivorous dishes, with steaks a
firm favourite. The 43 is all about steak and other
grilled meat, served still sizzling and accompanied
by generous helpings of sides in an authentic Latin
fashion. Indeed, to inspect the protein-rich meal on
your plate, you could be forgiven for thinking you
were somewhere more exotic than Kilmarnock.
It may seem an unlikely location for a Mexican
steakhouse, but it’s one that appears to be working;
the restaurant does a steady walk-in trade as well
as supplying a takeaway and delivery service that’s
proven to be immensely popular. Billing itself as
an upbeat Latin American restaurant, The 43 is
so named on account of its location on the town’s
Titchfield Street. Open till 10pm daily (9pm on
Sundays), the steakhouse does much more than
beef served every which way. Hungry eaters should
consider requesting the bottomless ribs that keep
coming as long as you can keep devouring them.
Taco Tuesday dispenses a free taco with every
order and Monday Magic sees 50% slashed off all
starters. On the grill menu, the fresh steak salsa
looks appetising and certainly hits the spot judging
by a string of positive online reviews. Alternatively,
the fish of the day makes an excellent choice when
served as part of a coconut fish curry. Away from
the grill, The 43 does a range of Mexican classics
including pulled pork tacos that are loaded to the
brim and topped with melted cheese, jalapenos,
guacamole and salsa. There’s also fresh corn on
the cob, crispy baked potato skins, spicy chicken
wings and pan fried tiger prawns. From empanadas
to nachos and from calamari to cordero en romero
(rosemary skewered lamb), The 43 is the real deal.
