BIRMINGHAM
MUSEUM
An intoxicating day of adventure
awaits at Birmingham Museum
& Art Gallery. Whether you’re
interested in fine art, Anglo-
Saxon gold, Ancient Egyptian
antiquities or the history of
Birmingham itself, you’re sure
to enjoy world-class facility.
Over 40 galleries showcase
impressive collections – many
of international importance –
from a diverse array of fields.
Indeed, the museum is home
to the world’s largest public
collection of Pre-Raphaelite
art, although several modes of
artistic expression are similarly
well represented. Centuries of
European civilisation, too, are
laid bare, with social history,
ethnography
and
culture
coming under the spotlight.
While the Birmingham School
of Art allows visitors to discover
progressive artwork produced
in the city at the turn of the 19th
century, the new Baroque art
gallery features work by major
artists such as Guercino and
Peter Paul Rubens. There is
also a natural history section
dedicated to the city during
wartime. Here, you’ll find
everything from bomb damage
reports to articles of clothing.
If Pharaonic knick-knacks are
more up your street, the Ancient
Egypt Gallery is crammed full of
interesting artefacts like vases,
chests and amulets; there’s
even an elaborately bandaged
Graeco-Roman mummy!
