The Church Inn is a charming
soul food pub in Birmingham’s
Jewellery Quarter. At one time
a traditional ale house on
the street corner, the venue
benefited from a £500,000
facelift before reopening in early
2013. Nowadays you’ll find
American diner-esque booths,
a Parisienne dining room, a
brand-new function room and a
splendid roof terrace. The pub
sells an assortment of real ales
and specialist spirits, as well
as Louisianan cocktails and
a selection of wines. Popular
down-and-dirty
cocktails
include the Sazerac, rye
whiskey stirred with Peychaud’s
bitters and flavoured with a hint
of absinthe. Or perhaps the
Ramos gin fizz – Portobello
Road gin shaken with fresh
lemon and lime, sugar, milk,
cream, egg white and orange
flower water topped with soda
– will be more to your taste.
The Deep South-inspired
menu, meanwhile, is replete
with fine choices, including
the Rocksteady burger – jerk-
spiced chicken breast topped
with aioli, the package held
together in a beautiful bun from
local baker’s Peel & Stone.
Further highlights include
catfish goujons, blackened
hake, roasted sweet potato
grits and slow-cooked oxtail
flavoured with Scotch bonnets
and a blend of spices. Yummy.
