SEALIFE
BIRMINGHAM
Birmingham has a wealth
of visitor attractions, but the
National Sea Life Centre
comfortably ranks among the
best. With over 60 displays
of freshwater and marine life,
you can comfortably spent
an entire afternoon exploring
the complex. A breathtaking
underwater world is on display,
with indigenous marine life from
the Antarctic, the Caribbean
and Europe. Indeed, there
are some 2,000 sea creatures
residing here, from starfish and
manta rays to tropical sharks,
jellyfish and seahorses. One
recently-introduced attraction
even allows visitors to interact
with a cute colony of Gentoo
penguins. Housed in a specially-
built Arctic landscape where
the temperature is set to eight
degrees, the penguins go about
their business, waddling and
trumpeting as they dive into
their ice-cold 70,000 litre tank.
The visitor thoroughfares at
the Sea Life Centre include a
network of underwater tunnels
offering splendid, 360-degree
views of the tanks; there’s
nothing quite like the sight of
a giant Pacific octopus gliding
overhead. If you want to learn
more about the inhabitants
themselves, meanwhile, regular
educational talks are conducted
throughout the day. All in, Sealife
Birmingham makes a great day
out for the whole family.
