The tagline is ‘Bristol’s best-
kept secret prohibition bar’, but
in all honesty, the secret’s been
out for a while – Hyde & Co is
widely acknowledged as one
of the city’s most fashionable
hostelries. The throwback
bar is designed to resemble
a speakeasy, and the low-lit
vibe and blues music certainly
make you want to bite on your
toothpick and wipe a speck of
lint from your pinstripe gangster
suit. Benefiting from a cool
ambience, the bar presents
the ultimate hideaway from
the modern world. In fact, it’s
essentially barracked to repel
the outside world – visitors must
press a buzzer to be admitted
entry, which lends the place a
certain degree of exclusivity.
Inside, the decor calls to mind
that of F Scott Fitzgerald’s
heyday. There’s even a piano
in the corner, as well as several
vintage lampshades scattered
haphazardly about. Settle
into your seat, grab a leather-
bound drinks menu and scan
the options. The cocktails on
offer are sinfully good, classic
concoctions said to have been
drawn from the Prohibition era.
One, Caribbean Importance,
combines
banana-infused
Dolin Vermouth, cider brandy
and a dash of honey sherry
vinegar. Perfect for pre-dinner
drinks or a romantic evening
out, Hyde & Co is a terrific find.
