M SHED
Anyone visiting Bristol for a few
days should include a trip to M
Shed on their itinerary, situated
on the city’s historic wharf.
Housed in a 1950s transit shed,
the unique history museum
tells the story of Bristol from
prehistoric times to the modern
day. Working in tandem with
the city’s residents, it is home
to a rich collection of displays
and a living museum packed
to the rafters with amazing
photographs and charming
artefacts. The Bristol Places
gallery is where you can learn
about how the city’s denizens
have shaped the city. You can
hear about Bristol’s efforts
during wartime, meet the
thecodontosaurus
dinosaur
and view various modes
of 20th century transport,
from old buses and trains to
airplanes and taxicabs. The L
Shed, which adjoins the main
building, houses thousands
of items from its maritime
and social history collections.
Many of the M Shed’s most
prominent exhibits are located
outside, on the docks. Staffed
by a passionate team of
volunteers, the famous working
exhibits include electric cranes,
locomotive engines and the
Pyronaut, an integral part of the
docks’ firefighting service.
